Bull Semen Collection and Freezing
Bull semen collection is a relatively straightforward process that is followed by a series of strict handling and laboratory protocols to ensure high quality semen after freezing. Semen can also be collected, analysed and extended to use fresh in AI programs. Repro Hub offers storage of frozen semen or it can be delivered back to the producer.
Repro Hub has trained with, and works closely with, Jasmin Hyatt, Veterinary Reproduction Specialist of Veterinary Reproduction Consultancy in Orange. Kristen has also sought out extra-mural training in semen handling domestically and carried out an internship at World West Sire Services in Montana, USA in 2024. All with the aim of ensuring an exceptional quality product every time.
Benefits of Semen Freezing
Preservation of genetics for insurance should anything happen to your bull
Genetic gain achieved by use of your valuable bulls over more animals than possible with a single natural mating
Allowing the genetics to be available to other producers
FAQs
How many straws will I get from one collection?
The number of straws for any one collection will differ significantly based on the individual bull. They may give from 50 to 500 straws. Not every bull will give a good, high quality semen sample that survives the freezing process on the first go. Often, more than one attempt is required.
Do you come on-farm for collection?
Yes, we do! Stay tuned for options for on centre collections in the near future.
Do I need to do anything in preparation for collection?
For best results, bulls should be in good body condition and physical health. Having served a female(s) in the weeks prior is an advantage but not a strict requirement. Similarly, for best results, it is advised that they have not had access to females in heat in the 3-5 days ahead of collection.
How long does it take?
The collection process is relatively quick. Extender is added to the semen on-farm, and then taken to the laboratory. Here, morphology is performed by Dr Jasmin Hyatt of Veterinary Reproduction Consultancy. Further extending is then done, followed by processing, equilibration time and then finally, the freezing all carried out by Kristen. All up, this takes most of the day. Post-thaw, the sample is looked at by both Dr Jasmin Hyatt and Kristen. You will be kept informed along the way.
